My Brother and I
By Avery,
6, Woodstock, GA, USA
One day I took my brother Oliver to the park. He was having a lot of fun and so was I. Oliver was watching me do the monkey bars. Oliver was a little bit too close to me. I accidentally hit him. I had to run as fast as I could! He was crying but he was okay. So the next time I play on the monkey bars, I will make sure he is far away doing something else! (September 2008)

Fishing for Memories
By David,
13, Chicago, USA
My father and I walk down the slope, Carrying the fishing rods. We check out the dark green mossy water, We see fish jumping out long for us to get a glance, The large sun, bright in our faces. We capture blue scaled shiny fish, And interesting catfish and crabs. Our intention's not to kill So we throw the fish back. It was enough just being with my dad, To look back and see our big smiles, Him making fun of me when I Capture a small fish, Me making fun of him back. (May 2008)

The war
By Jesus,
13, Chicago, USA
It was the winter of 2002 It was snowing non-stop for three days My friends, my cousins and I were starting something A snow war Building snow forts and borders Making piles of snowballs The snow blowing hard on us Then my cousin Julio grunts They threw a snowball at him My friends and my cousin are attacking They throw and keep throwing Right in our faces Then they stop We notice they are very still They have run out of snowballs It's quiet, really quiet They don't know we're right behind them We built a secret tunnel My cousin has a shovel full of snow And my friend and I have two buckets Full of snowballs We tap them on the shoulders They turn around and thump! That's all you hear, thumps and howls They fall to the ground Helplessly We look at them Then at each other With the shovel, we bury them With all the snow from their forts and walls They scream and yell but all you hear is Soft muffled sounds Then we unbury them We won the war we yell out So we all go home When I get there I drink hot chocolate (May 2008)

Broken Family!
By Gemma,
15, Scunthorpe, UK
I feel alone, isolated, not wanted, and forgotten about. There was a time when we were a proper family, but now everything has just fallen apart.
Why did this have to happen? It was fine the way it was. Nothing was wrong until now, it's happened to me now, for the first time, and there's nothing I can do about it.
I wish I could turn the clocks back, but now it's too late, no one listens to me, no one's there, without a doubt I'm losing them.
What has happened to me? It came at the wrong time, when I need them most.
Does it make me feel unwanted? Why did things just have to fall apart? My family's moving further apart, my life is changing and I don't know how I will be able to cope!
It was so hard to look again, now I've lost my family for the first time, I hope it doesn't happen again. I've heard someone say a family without love, isn't a family at all. Could it be true? (April 2008)

My dad is in the Army
By Jada,
11, Fort Bragg,North Carolina
Do you enjoy your birthday? Im sure many of you do. I used to love my birthday until this birthday came when I turned ten. That year was one of the worst years of my life, I had to move away from my family which was very hard for me. My dad decided to join the military. It wasn't that much of a big deal to me at first because I thought he wasn't serious. I was wrong. So we had to move. I have never been away from my family, we did everything together. I had to meet new friends and many new people. I had to start a whole new life. I had to move to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I thought I would hate living out here, but I really seem to enjoy it. I think I can survive out here. Fort Bragg really isn't all that bad. When I finally realy started to enjoy myself I found out my dad had to go to Iraq I was extremely mad. I have to go a whole year without my dad. My dad and I do so many things together. We go watch dragracing together and go look and motorcycles but my mom think those things are weird. My dad is now in Iraq, so I want to become a young writer before he come back to surprise him. I would also like to get Chip Foose to fix up his hideous car. When my dad get back, he will have a lot of catching up to do. (Jan 07)

First year of grade 4
By Nicole,
9, Mississauga, USA
Hi my name is Nicole. I am in gr.4 and my teacher's name is Ms.S. Grade 4 is very easy but, so far but we have a lot of quizzes. I like my teacher she is young and pretty. Well from last year I had a best friend named Milica and she is in my class this year I am so happy but we don't sit together because the teacher saw that we always talk! Well we did not learn about medieval times yet I can't wait till we do. I also can't wait till we go on trips. In my class we sit in groups and if any group is good they get a point and if they are not good they lose a point and at the end of a week, the table with most points wins a prize! I don't know what will happen if two or more tables both win, maybe I will see. From Nicole (Jan 07)

My Summer Vacation
By Jasmine,
12, Ontario, Canada
During my summer vacation... I did a lot of things!
First when I heard my best buddy Niko was moving I was so disappointed. He has the cutest baby brother twins.(23 months old) So we did a lot of fun stuff together, like swimming at the Riding Club. We had a great time, even his baby brothers came, Pano and Stavro. Niko's parents were so fantastic, they took us sledding in the winter time and skiing/tubing too!!! We had a great time, they moved to London, but we keep in touch a lot and they come in the summer time to swim!
Second we went to the Riding Club a lot, one day I caught a fish with a very tiny net, a few weeks later I caught a baby salmon. I was amazing and interesting at the same time!!! We went to the Riding Club almost every week of the summer break!!! It was exellent!!!
Third of all my mom and dad had their 25th anniversary! It was fun, it was an Arabic party because my mom and my dad are from Egypt/Cairo. So we listened to music and a belly dancer came later on. It was a blast, my cousins were there too. I danced with my cousin Liza and people watched me dance and said that I would make a great belly dancer when I'm older! Also Liza's brother Alexi was there!!!
I had to write this for an essay at school so I'm writing off of my mind, It's hard to remember. But any ways ...
I hope you enjoyed reading this, I had a fantastic summer break hope I'll have one next year:)
Sincerly: Jasmine

My Awesome Spring Break
By Alliyah,
11, Lott, TX , USA
Many people have a Spring Break. You get out of school knowing that you have a whole week to forget about school and have some fun! I hope you're on Spring Break right now because if you are, it back, relax, and enjoy this story. For my Spring Break,I went to San Antonio.I had a blast. My mom, dad, sister, Penny, Donald, Chase, and I left for San Antonio on a sunny, Wednesday morning. Everybody filled up their cars with stinky, black gas and said "Goodbye home". We arrived at our Howard Johnson Hotel rooms around Eight o'clock. We unpacked all of our clothes and other needs. By that time everyone was hungry. We drove over to the Denny's restaurant across the street. I ate a pancake, egg, and sausage breakfast meal. After eating the sensational food, we went back to the hotel for a good night's sleep. The next day, everyone woke up excitedly and got ready to go to the San Antonio Zoo. It was gigantic! It was also a good thing I brought my digital camera along. A few of the awesome animals we saw were the fat hippo, a indiffernt zebra, colorful parrots, and an annoyed ostrich. My favorite parts of the zoo were the baby monkeys and the dark aquarium. My favorite fish were the one foot long goldfish. There was one beautiful goldfish that was white with small blotches of gold. At the zoo, I had a funny but cute caricature drawn of myself, as well as Chase. I was an orange monkey and he was a famous football player. After we were done looking at the animals, we rode a little train that led you from the zoo to the Witte Museum. I loved the museum. It had real, live dinosaur bones on display. Everybody loved it! We even got flattened pennies with a Witte Museum imprint on them for souvenirs. After a long, busy but exciting day, we ate supper at a restaurant called Joe's Crab Shack. After the meal, Penny, Chase, and Donald left but we stayed. On Friday, we packed our trunk with our suitcases and other stuff and we headed in our car to the Alamo. When we arrived,I thought I was in a dream. I couldn't believe that I was standing in a place that I had done research on. It was Alamotastic! After studying ancient history, we walked over to the Guiness World Record Museum. It was better than I had expected. After the museum, we all went to the Ripley's Haunted Adventure House. I thought that it was kind of funny, but my sister Brittany didn't. Once we were finished being scared half to death, it was time for the Davy Crockett Activity Center. Davy Crockett fought in the Alamo. First my mom and Brittany rode on a small cart, then my dad and I. Once the ride was over, there were activities. The activities were great! Once the Davy Crockett Center was over with, we all got snow cones and walked over to the Rivercenter or the so-called mall. I hoped that we could have gone on the Riverwalk, but we couldn't. When we were done looking at objects and such, we walked to our silver car and started the long four hour trip home. As you have read, I did a lot of things. Many people have Spring Break as well as me. Like I once said, sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy your Spring Break. (Editor's note: submitted October 2006, but I'm guessing this was written in the spring!)

Mum and Dad's family memories
By Laurajane ,
10, Aberdeen, Scotland
In the days when my parents were young, my dad was in the army and my mum with 1 to 8 kids. Since my dad was in the army we were moving place to place. Some of us were born in Scotland my mum and second oldest brother was born in England; my dad was born were moving place to place. Some of us were born in Scotland my mum and second oldest brother was born in England, my dad was born in America, even my oldest brother was born in Hong Kong, oldest sister was born in Germany and my littler brother and I was born in Ireland. The first one born was Raymond, Martin, Nicola, me, Alexander, Shania, Brandon and the youngest one of all is called Destiny Joy!
My parents met at a bus stop and since then they had a great time together. One night my dad asked my mum if she would marry him but in a great shock she said no, she thought she was too young. Dad was upset so he got on his motorbike and drove off. Suddenly he started to go a bit faster and he crashed his motorbike on a stone came flying off loosing his shoe on the way then landing under a tree. When he got home he was so upset that he thought that he should spend all the money that he had saved up for the wedding since she said no! On mums next birthday she agreed to marry him but he did not have a lot of money left so they had to get married in a registry office.
In the army dad was a sergeant mager and he got a glass trophy and some medals, he was kind off the captain. He wore a navy green suit with a red strip and a navy green hat with a golden shield shaped medal. He had time off to go and see mum and all off us, he saw everyone off us being born except martin. My dad was even kind of a doctor to the other men; he still has the stethoscope today. He loved the army but he had gotten hurt so he had to quit and we moved to Scotland and we have not moved since.
We have tons of fun together, I hope you are having fun with your family. (July 2006)

My Scary Experience
By Laura,
14, USA
I was sitting on the couch Saturday night. I was home alone because my parents had gone out to eat together. Suddenly, I hear a noise coming from the porch outside. I walk to the back door and open it. Nothing was there. I sit on the couch again and 5 minutes later, I hear the noise again. I check outside again, and this time, I see a gun on the ground. I gasp, slam the door shut, and lock it. I sit back on the couch. About 20 minutes later, the alarm goes off. I run to my room, grab the phone, and hide in the closet. I dialed 911 and the police came to the house right away. They said that someone came into the house and is hiding. I was so scared I was shaking. The police started searching the house and found a man hiding in one of the closets. He was holding a bag full of weapons. The man got arrested. (July 2006)

Play date
By Savannah,
8, Southport, UK
On Wednesday 5th of July 2006 I felt sad. Everyone in my class got invited to my friend's suprise party except me. I had nobody to play with. Then something amazing happened. A year 4 boy from my school came and knocked on my front door. I answered the door and he said "would you like to come and play at my house for two hours?" he said smiling slightly. I was overjoyed and had a great time. (July 2006)

The trip to Paris
By Tarun,
9, London, UK
One day I was going to Paris in a train called Eurostar. The station where the trains were put was Waterloo. When I walked past the train I thought it was rather long. When I got in the train I was comfortable. I heard that Eurostar goes underground for 20 min. The underground tunnel was 40 miles, which was very long. The station that we got off was Gare de Nord. The station was quiet huge. We took a hotel in IBIS Anchor hotels. The first visit that we had made was to the Eiffel Tower. The tower was rather high. We went up to the top floor. I was really afraid of heights. On the next day I went to Disney Land. It was really fun. There were only rides there. I loved that day. The next day I went to a church. There were stunning paintings there. After that we went to Gare de Nord again and travelled to London. (May 2006)
